Nancy nudge towards last 16

The odds seem to be in inexperienced AS Nancy-Lorraine's favour as they take a 1-1 draw into the home leg of their UEFA Cup Round of 32 tie against FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

• Marc-Antoine Fortune put the French side ahead with nine minutes of normal time remaining in the first leg in Ukraine, and while Dario Srna levelled the scores on the night three minutes later, Shakhtar's record in knockout ties against French opponents may be of comfort to Nancy in the second leg.

• Shakhtar qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group D. Nancy finished second in UEFA Cup Group E.

• Prior to the first leg, the two sides had never met in European competition.

• Shakhtar had played French opposition in two previous two-legged ties and also met a Ligue 1 side in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage, winning 1-0 at Stade Rennais FC. They lost both of those knockout ties. In total, including last week's game against Nancy, they have played six games against French opponents, winning two, drawing two and losing two.

• Having played Rennes before losing out to LOSC Lille Métropole in last season's UEFA Cup Round of 32, Nancy are the third French side Shakhtar have faced in the last two seasons.

• Nancy had never played against Ukrainian opposition prior to last week's first leg. They have played only eleven games in European competition to date, while Shakhtar have played 103.

• Prior to taking over at Shakhtar, coach Mircea Lucescu was involved in three UEFA Champions League ties with French clubs as coach of Galatasaray SK. Games against FC Nantes Atlantique, AS Monaco FC and Paris Saint-Germain FC produced three wins, two defeats and a draw.

• During the Romanian's reign at FC Dinamo 1948 Bucuresti, his side lost 2-1 at home against Olympique Lyonnais in the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

• The first-leg lineups were:
Nancy: Gregorini, Chrétien, Diakhate, Puygrenier, Biancalani (Sauget 46), Berenguer, Luiz, Duchemin (Gavanon 87), Curbelo, Hadji, Fortune.
Shakhtar: Shust, Srna, Chygrynskiy, Kucher, Shevchuk (Gay 65), Matuzalem, Fernandinho, Tymoschuk, Rodriguez, Bielik (Vorobey 74), Marica.

• The aggregate winners will face FC Steaua Bucuresti or Sevilla FC in the Round of 16, playing away on 8 March and the home leg a week later.
