'Challenge'
The Spanish club's decision to change coach came after a 3-0 defeat by Valencia CF on Saturday night that left them 17th in the 20-team top flight. Abel's last job was at CF Ciudad de Murcia, the team he guided to a fourth-placed finish in the Segunda División last season. "It's a challenge for me and for everyone, but I've come here to work and I feel I'm qualified enough to pull the side through," he said.
Fine career
The 46-year-old is a fomer Club Atlético de Madrid and Spain goalkeeper who holds the domestic record for the longest run without conceding a goal. He went 1,275 minutes, or 14 games, between November 1990 and March 1991 before being beaten. After ending his playing days with Rayo Vallecano, Abel began his coaching career with the goalkeepers at Atlético before stepping up to become César Ferrando's assistant in 2004/05. He then moved on to Murcia for the 2005/06 campaign.
