Odense BK caused one of the biggest upsets of the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round on Saturday by advancing on the away-goals rule against Hibernian FC. Ethnikos Achnas FC and Kayserispor became the first sides from Cyprus and Turkey, respectively, to qualify for the UEFA Cup, albeit the second qualifying round.
Hibernian FC 2-1 Odense BK (agg: 2-2; OB win on away goals)
Tobias Grahn's goal saw OB progress despite losing 2-1 to Hibernian FC at Easter Road. The home side came out looking for an early goal to cancel Chris Sørenson's penalty from the first leg but they struggled to create openings and it was Grahn who broke the deadlock five minutes after half-time. Tony Mowbray's team now required three goals to progress and drew level almost immediately when Rob Jones headed in a mis-hit shot from Michael Stewart. Substitute Paul Dalglish set up a tense finish when he prodded in ten minutes from time but the Danish side held on to advance on away goals.
FC Twente 3-1 Kalmar FF (agg: 3-2)
Sharbel Touma scored a hat-trick as Twente overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Kalmar to advance. The Swedish midfielder broke the deadlock three minutes after half-time to level the aggregate scoreline although Lasse Johansson restored the visitors' lead midway through the half. But Touma was to prove the scourge of his compatriots, and two goals in the space of six minutes – the first a stunning strike – sealed Twente's progress.
Ethnikos Achnas FC 2-3 Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC (agg: 4-3)
Achnas advanced despite losing 3-2 at home to Petach-Tikva on Saturday. The Cypriot side fell 2-0 behind at half-time to goals from Rubel Sarsour and Jefisley Caldeira, but they hit back after the break. On 74 minutes substitute Milan Belić converted Christofis Pashialis' low cross then five minutes later Pashialis teed up Christos Poyiatzis who volleyed in. Patrick Suffo restored the Israeli side's lead with five minutes left but Achnas held on.
Kayserispor 2-0 Larissa FC (agg: 2-0)
Gökhan Ünal scored both goals as Kayserispor defeated Greek side Larissa 2-0. In a game Kayserispor dominated, Gökhan put the home side in front on 32 minutes after latching on to Leonardo Iglesias' pass. He struck again nine minutes from time, collecting the ball from Bülent Bölükbaşı before unleashing a powerful shot to complete the scoring.
KAA Gent 1-1 Grasshopper Club (agg: 2-3)
A 1-1 draw in Belgium was enough for Grasshoppers to see off Gent and advance 3-2 on aggregate. Grasshoppers had the best chances of the first half but dangerman Biscotte Mbala Mbula could make neither of the ones that came his way count. Marcin Zewlakow had the best opportunity for Gent but missed with only the keeper to beat. Grasshoppers went ahead on 64 minutes, Eduardo broke forward and fired towards goal and the ball was deflected into his own net by Dario Smoje. Dominic Foley equalised two minutes later for Gent with a powerful long-range drive but that was as good as it got for the Belgian side.
FC Tiraspol 1-1 SV Ried (agg: 2-4)
Three thousand Tiraspol fans were at the Sheriff stadium to see if their side could overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against SV Ried, but it was not to be as the Austrian team left Moldova with a 1-1 draw to advance 4-2 on aggregate. Ried were without a number of injured regulars, but still assumed control and opened the scoring on 30 minutes when Michael Mehlem released Jovan Damjanović who kept his cool to score. Ried held the upper hand for the rest of the match, but could not add to their lead and with seven minutes to play Nicolai Rudac drew Tiraspol level. Ried should still have won, with Ronald Brunmayr and Damjanović both squandering great chances, but their misses would not prove costly. Tiraspol ended the match with ten men following Andrey Novikov's dismissal, but by then the result was beyond doubt.
