Former RC Deportivo La Coruña coach Javier Irureta has agreed to take over at Real Betis Balompié, signing a one-year contract with the Primera División club.
Initial agreement
The 58-year-old Basque coach has agreed to take the post for an initial 12 months with the option of a further season at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium. Irureta and his representatives met with Betis officials in Madrid to negotiate the deal which will see him succeed Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, who resigned last month and took over at Greek outfit AEK Athens FC on Wednesday.
Deportivo successes
Irureta left Deportivo last summer after a seven-year stint at the Riazor. During that time he led the Galician club to the league title in 2000 and the Copa del Rey in 2002. The experienced coach had previously been in charge of a number of clubs, including Real Oviedo, Real Racing Club Santander, RC Celta de Vigo, Athletic Club Bilbao and Real Sociedad de Fútbol.
