SV Zulte-Waregem have capped off an excellent season by winning the Belgian Cup, defeating R. Excelsior Mouscron 2-1 at the Stade Roi Baudouin with a last-minute winner from Tim Matthys.
Leleu opener
Mattys was involved in the opening goal, directing a free-kick onto the head of Stefan Leleu, who put Zulte-Waregem in front. Adnan Custović came close to an equaliser before the break but headed just wide. Mouscron were level just after the hour mark, when Custović applied the finishing touch after Marcin Zewłakow has seen his initial shot blocked and then cross the rebound towards his colleague.
Impressive season
Zulte-Waregem's Tony Sargeant had a shot cleared off the line before Matthys settled the match in stoppage time, curling in a free-kick from the edge of the box. Newly-promoted Zulte-Waregem now have a major piece of silverware and a place in the UEFA Cup to add to their seventh-placed league finish.
'I am a happy man'
"It was not a good match, but that I expected as both teams have not has a good time of it over the last six weeks of the season," said Zulte-Waregem coach Francky Dury. "Even though we are maybe not ready to go into Europe, we are going there anyway. Make no mistake, I am a happy man."
