FC Girondins de Bordeaux's hopes of a UEFA Champions League group-stage berth next season have been dealt a blow as Czech midfielder Vladimír Šmicer is unlikely to return before the end of the campaign.
World Cup worry
The 32-year-old, who played a major role in helping Liverpool FC lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup last season, has been out of action since the end of February with a hamstring injury, which is also causing him discomfort around the knee. Šmicer, who has played his part in helping Bordeaux climb to second in Ligue 1, is also concerned about his participation in the FIFA World Cup finals this summer and has travelled to Germany for tests.
