Lee Cattermole's first goal for Middlesbrough FC gave the Teesside team a 1-0 away win against Manchester City FC in the English Premiership while West Ham United FC were held at home.
Cattermole delight
At the City of Manchester stadium the 18-year-old Middlesbrough midfielder met Stewart Downing's left-wing cross with a glancing header late in the first half to score the only goal of the game. The result took Middlesbrough up to 40 points, the mark often seen as enough to ensure Premiership survival, and will raise morale ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup quarter-final at the Riverside Stadium, where they will try to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit against FC Basel 1893. City slip to 13th place, level on points with Middlesbrough, after suffering four consecutive defeats.
Sheringham landmark
Teddy Sheringham celebrated his 40th birthday as West Ham took on Charlton Athletic FC, but was unable to mark the occasion with a goal as the sides drew 0-0. The former English international came on at half-time and nearly scored a late winner, but saw his close-range effort saved by Thomas Myhre. West Ham take eighth place from Wigan Athletic FC, who travel to Blackburn Rovers FC on Monday night, while Charlton stay eleventh.
