Portugal defender Fernando Meira has extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart until summer 2010.
Key performer
Since moving to Germany midway through the 2001/02 season from SL Benfica, Meira has become one of the cornerstones of the Bundesliga club. The 27-year-old, whose original deal had been due to expire in 2007, has played 117 league games, scoring five goals. Meira will be an integral part of the Portugal squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, having been capped 28 times.
'Lots of potential'
Despite Stuttgart's failure to progress beyond the UEFA Cup Round of 32, Meira has seen enough to encourage him at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion. "I am happy to sign the extension," he said. "My family agreed it would be best if I stayed in Stuttgart. Stuttgart have a lot of potential and I want to contribute towards achieving success in the years to come."
