Standard wait
The R. Standard de Liège captain becomes the first Portuguese player to claim the accolade, pushing last year's pick, RSC Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany, into second place. Kompany's Swedish team-mate Christian Wilhelmsson finished third, but it is Conceição who takes the plaudits after becoming the first winner from Standard in 23 years.
'Good motivation'
"This title doesn't belong to me, but to the whole club," said the 31-year-old, who has scored six goals in 17 games for the Belgian First Division leaders this season. "It is very important to me, and good motivation for me to continue doing what I have been doing and help give the fans what they have been waiting so long for - the league title."
