Robinho scores
With the visitors fielding a youthful side as they looked to make amends for losing 1-0 in the home leg, Madrid were able to play some slick football. They had already gone close through Julio César Baptista and Roberto Soldado before Robinho opened the scoring in the 30th minute, chasing Guti's incisive pass into the penalty area before sliding the ball under the onrushing Iñaki Lafuente.
Cruel fortune
Athletic rarely threatened and Madrid doubled their lead on 70 minutes after David Beckham arrowed a low free-kick in from the left. Lafuente did brilliantly to block the initial effort with a diving save but he could only palm the ball straight into the path of Sergio Ramos who bundled it into the net. Soldado duly headed Madrid's third with three minutes of normal time remaining and, with Athletic's spirit broken, Robinho added a fourth.
