'Two specialists'
The 31-year-old former English international last represented United in a Premiership fixture against Birmingham City FC on 28 December, with an eye problem - initially thought to have been caused by a bang to the head - subsequently keeping him out. A club statement said: "Paul Scholes will miss the rest of the season with a medical condition affecting the vision in his right eye. Scholes has seen two specialists in recent weeks who have agreed that he needs to rest for a period of three months.
'Disappointment'
"Obviously it is a disappointment for Paul and Manchester United that he will miss the rest of this season. We look forward to having him back for pre-season training." Another blow for United is the news that Irish international John O'Shea will be sidelined for up to six weeks after breaking two ribs. The versatile 24-year-old was injured during last week's FA Cup tie against Burton Albion FC, but the problem was only diagnosed following Sunday's victory against Liverpool FC.
On course
Having failed to qualify from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, Sir Alex Ferguson's side are hoping to secure a swift return to the competition by finishing at least as runners-up in the Premiership. They are on course to do so, the 1-0 defeat of Liverpool having moved them four points clear of their closest rivals for second spot.
