Viking seek European boost

Hodgson hopeful
Roy Hodgson's side are heading for a third-place finish at best with just two games of the 2005 Norwegian season remaining. And with their title ambitions over, Hodgson hopes his team can rise to the challenge of a strong UEFA Cup Group A that also features Hamburger SV, PFC CSKA Sofia and SK Slavia Praha.

'Good test'
With Monaco up first in Stavanger tonight, the English coach believes the visit of the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League finalists will spur his side on. Hodgson said: "Monaco will be a good test of where we stand internationally. They have got quality players in all positions, but we are aiming for the three points."

Nhleko concern
Striker Toni Nhleko and right-back Bjørn Dahl are both doubtful after picking up injuries in the goalless draw with Vålerenga IF at the weekend. Peter Kovacs (knee), Fredric Lundqvist (heel) and Robert Mambo Mumba (thigh) are all definitely out.

Chevantón out
Monaco are without two key players in Italian goalkeeper Flavio Roma (back) and Uruguayan striker Javier Chevantón (thigh). The latter had been rested for the 3-0 home win against FC Metz, as the club continues its resurgence under new coach Francesco Guidolin. Also missing are midfielders Gerard López and Diego Pérez, despite hopes they would recover from knee and thigh injuries respectively.

Challenge expected
The coach is keen for his side to avoid further injuries at the Viking stadium. Guidolin said: "We expect a tough physical challenge but we'll do our best to match them. The main aim is to keep on improving."
