Tina Theune-Meyer, Germany coach
I was delighted by the way in which we took our goals but not as happy with the performance. I thought tonight's game was an improvement on our performance against Norway but I know deep down that we can play better. In an ideal world we would have moved the ball around a little bit quicker but I guess in an ideal world we would have had longer to prepare for this tournament after the club season ended - you can't have everything though! I am pleased with our start to this tournament when you take everything into consideration. We are a very physical team and we were too strong for Italy. They have the technique but not the physical strength which we possess. It was also great to see Birgit grab her goal which makes her the top scorer in our history. A good night all round.
Carolina Morace, Italy coach
I am fine with the result. Yes, we lost 4-0 but we were playing a wonderful team and a side who are simply too big and too strong for us to realistically compete alongside. We created three chances which I was pleased with. It is a shame we could not convert one of them but I would like to congratulate Germany and hope they go all the way to the final. For us, we must hope that women's football is taken more seriously back in Italy. The current state of our game means this was our final and I told the girls to enjoy themselves and I think they did.
