England opportunity
The former West Ham United FC forward has enjoyed considerable success since joining Tottenham in January 2004, scoring 23 goals in all competitions this season and forcing his way into Sven-Göran Eriksson's squad for England's 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
European hopes
Martin Jol's side are in the hunt for a place in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup and 22-year-old Defoe has played a major part in reinvigorating the club since the departure of manager Jacques Santini last autumn. Defoe has also won ten England caps, scoring one goal, after making his debut against Sweden in March 2004.
Jol delight
Manager Jol said: "I am delighted and so is he. He's played a big part in our season because he's scored goals. And I think he can improve on things."
