Torn ligament
The Uruguayan international was forced out of training with the German high-fliers on Tuesday. Subsequent scans have revealed the full extent of the damage, with the player having once again torn a collateral ligament in his right knee. The injury means Schalke will not be able to call on his services as they compete with co-leaders FC Bayern München for the Bundesliga title.
Rangnick sympathy
The 26-year-old picked up the original problem while on international duty on 17 November and has not played for Schalke since. "We expect him to be out for four to six months," said coach Ralf Rangnick. "An injury of this nature is hard for any player to stomach. Gustavo will need our help in the months to come."
