Ajax agony for Maxwell

AFC Ajax are resigned to being without Maxwell for as long as eight months because of a cruciate ligament injury.

Snapped ligament
The Brazilian snapped the cruciate ligament in his right knee when he landed awkwardly after evading a tackle from Nuelson Wau during Ajax's 1-0 Dutch Cup semi-final defeat by Willem II last night.

Long road
He was stretchered off the field and a scan today revealed the extent of the damage with an official club statement saying: "The expectation is that the left-back's recovery will take eight months." The 23-year-old is under contract at Ajax until the summer of 2006 and was the Netherlands' Player of the Year last season.
