Holder Eto'o heads African short list

All five nominees for the 2004 CAF African Player of the Year are with European clubs, including Samuel Eto'o.

Attacking selection
FC Barcelona's prolific Cameroonian attacker Samuel Eto'o, last year's winner, is in the running against FC Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy, AS Monaco FC's Togolese forward Emmanuel Adebayor, Ivorian striker Didier Drogba of Chelsea FC, and Bolton Wanderers FC's Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha.

Other nominees
FC Internazionale Milano's Nigerian front-man Obafemi Martins and FC Girondins de Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh are among three nominees for the young player award, with RCD Espanyol's Cameroonian international Idriss Carlos Kameni in the running for the goalkeeper's prize.

Durban date
Meanwhile, Frenchman Roger Lemerre is on the short list for coach of the year after leading Tunisia to victory in the CAF African Cup of Nations, and George Weah, who starred for several European clubs, is one of three nominees for the 'African Legends' honour. All the winners will be announced in Durban, South Africa on 15 February.
