Real Madrid CF were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by second division side Real Valladolid on away goals this evening but the remaining Primera División teams all safely negotiated their third round second-leg ties, although the night belonged to 19-year-old Fernando Llorente, who scored a hat trick in his second first-team appearance for Athletic Club Bilbao.
Moré eliminates Madrid
Last year's finalists, Madrid had drawn a blank in Valladolid last week but, after a goalless first half, looked set to progress to the last eight as Michael Owen finally broke the deadlock five minutes past the hour. However, ten minutes later the Santiago Bernabéu was stunned into silence as Xavier Moré cut inside past Roberto Carlos and shot low past César Sánchez to send the visitors through.
Osasuna advance
CA Osasuna qualified for the quarter-finals despite losing 3-2 at Getafe CF thanks to their 2-0 success in the first leg. Gheorghe Craioveanu put the home team in front with a blistering strike on ten minutes but Getafe found themselves requiring another three goals after Iñaki Muñoz levelled with a equally impressive shot on the half-hour. Daniel Kome and Mario Cotelo pulled two goals back for Getafe but Muñoz put the tie out of reach with a superb strike with 15 minutes remaining.
Llorente heroics
Llorente, who only made his Athletic debut in Sunday's league match with RCD Espanyol, scored three at San Mamés as Athletic recorded an emphatic 6-0 win against UD Lanzarote. Joseba Etxeberria, Santiago Ezquerro and Pablo Orbaiz also registered to earn the Bilbao side a 7-2 aggregate win. Meanwhile, Real Betis Balompié held firm at home to CD Mirandés, the match ending goalless as Betis progressed 2-0 on aggregate.
Penalty shoot-out
Miguel Pérez's 69th-minute goal wiped out CD Numancia's 1-0 first-leg deficit against Elche CF and sent the match into extra time and then penalties. Numancia kept their nerve in the shoot-out, winning 5-3.
