Madrid host match against poverty

Social

Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane are the captains for Tuesday's anti-poverty match at Real Madrid CF.

United Nations programme
Billed as 'The match against poverty' all proceeds from the night will go to United Nations' Development Programme (UNDP) in assisting selected countries to combat poverty and aid global mobilisation. The game, now in its second edition, has the backing of world football's governing body, FIFA, and will kick off at 21.30CET.

Friends reunited
Ronaldo and Zidane have rounded up a glamorous cast of contemporaries to take part in the game. Madrid team-mates like David Beckham and Roberto Carlos will be joined by former Bernabéu favourites including Fernando Hierro and Fernando Redondo.

Strikers on show
FC Internazionale Milano strikers Adriano and Christian Vieri are among the players travelling over from Italy while former English internationals Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer will also be present. From Germany's Bundesliga, there will be Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov and Czech international Tomáš Rosický.

Schumacher to play
Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher will also take the field and he said: "I am sure that we are going to enjoy ourselves on the night and concentrate on raising funds for those who are most in need."

Coaches
Coaching each team will be a trio of management heavyweights. In charge of Ronaldo's team will be three Brazilian FIFA World Cup-winning coaches, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Carlos Alberto Parreira and Mário Zagalo. Zidane's team will take their orders from Marcello Lippi, Didier Deschamps and Luis Fernandez.

Collina on call
Presiding over the match for the second successive year will be Italian referee Pierluigi Collina, who said: "Everyone, referees and players, is looking forward to a great spectacle in Madrid for a worthy and important cause - the fight against poverty. I am sure we will see plenty of goals during the game, in which it is crucial that we raise the maximum amount of money possible to combat one of the most serious problems in the world today."
