Simão powers perfect Benfica

Members

Simão Sabrosa's winner against A. Académica de Coimbra prolonged SL Benfica's perfect start.

Simão hits post
Benfica were not at their best, but were rarely troubled by Académica, who were fortunate not to fall behind on 56 minutes. Danilo, the Académica goalkeeper, brought Simão down in the area, but the Benfica captain struck the left post with his penalty.

Second-half winner
On 73 minutes, however, Simão made up for that mistake when he collected a rebound off João Pereira's shot and beat Danilo with a powerful drive to make it three wins from three for Giovanni Trapattoni's side.

Vitória second
Benfica are the only team still boasting a 100 per cent record after three rounds and are two points clear at the top of the SuperLiga. Vitória FC, second on goal difference, drew 1-1 away to Boavista FC, in fourth, also on seven points, on Friday, while CF OS Belenenses climb to third after beating UD Leiria 2-1.

Giants slip
Champions FC Porto are still winless this season after drawing 2-2 with GD Estoril-Praia on Saturday, while on Monday Sporting Clube de Portugal fell to a 1-0 loss at home to CS Marítimo, revitalised under new coach Mariano Barreto. Gustavo Manduca, who scored Maritimo's only goal against UEFA Cup opponents Rangers FC on Thursday, repeated the trick on eleven minutes, while Sporting had Liedson sent off at the start of the second half for two yellow cards.

Antchouet goal
Henri Antchouet put Belenenses in front at the Restelo stadium on six minutes and the home side doubled their lead on 60 minutes when striker Luís Lourenço, on loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal, swept home a penalty after a foul by Paulo Gomes. Croatian international forward Petar Krpan pulled one back for Leiria eight minutes later, but the Lisbon side held on for their second win in three games.

Penafiel point
FC Penafiel picked up their first point of the season in new coach Luís Castro's first match in charge with a 1-1 draw at home to Rio Ave FC, who drew for the third match in succession. Central defender Pedro Franco put Rio Ave ahead with a header from a corner before Penafiel's Brazilian striker Wesley earned a point for the home side.

Gil Vicente lose again
Gil Vicente FC are still looking for their first point of the season after losing 1-0 away to SC Beira-Mar, Kingsley scoring the only goal of the game after six minutes. Moreirense FC climbed to sixth in the table after a thrilling 3-2 victory over CD Nacional. The home side jumped to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Filipe Anunciação and Manoel (two), but were forced to hang on for the points after the UEFA Cup hopefuls hit back through Marcelo and Cleomir.
