Chelsea FC failed to capitalise on Arsenal FC's failure to beat Bolton Wanderers FC yesterday, as they were held to their second scoreless draw in two Premiership games.
Winless streak
Just five days after comprehensively defeating Paris Saint-Germain FC in the UEFA Champions League, José Mourinho's side failed to find a way past a resilient Tottenham Hotspur FC side. Although Jacques Santini's charges could not end a run of 14 years without a league win against Chelsea, he will be the happier of the two coaches as Tottenham held the title contenders to a 0-0 draw that leaves Chelsea second with 14 points, two behind Arsenal. Tottenham are fifth.
Stunning strike
Newcastle United FC were looking to vanquish poor records of their own when they travelled to Southampton FC. They had not won a league game on the south coast for 32 years but with Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy restored to the starting eleven, Graeme Souness's side won 2-1 to record their first away victory since last October. David Prutton deflected Shearer's shot into his own goal just before half-time and although Anders Svensson levelled the scores on 53 minutes, defender Stephen Carr restored Newcastle's lead with a stunning 30-metre strike four minutes later.
Everton go third
Newcastle's north-east rivals Middlesbrough FC had a less productive day as they lost 1-0 at Everton FC. Marcus Bent scored the only goal of the game just after half-time as David Moyes's side moved to third in the table.
