Tottenham Hotspur FC have signed English Under-21 international defender Calum Davenport from Coventry City FC in a deal potentially worth €4.5m.
'Great talent'
The 21-year-old is the eleventh signing since the arrival of ex-France coach Jacques Santini and was Coventry's player of the year for 2003/04. Tottenham will pay €1.6m up front with more to come on Davenport making certain numbers of appearances, and sporting director Frank Arnesen said: "He is a great talent with special qualities, a very promising central defender who possesses a good mentality and who will further enhance our growing squad."
Final appearance
Coventry manager Peter Reid, who saw Davenport make his final club appearance in Monday's 2-1 league victory against West Ham United FC, said: "I am obviously very disappointed to let Calum go but I do not think it is right to deny him this opportunity to play in the Premiership. Calum is an immensely talented defender who has all the attributes to go as far as he wants in the game."
