Davies delight
Bolton had beaten Liverpool only once in the league in 40 years, but Kevin Davies's solitary 38th-minute strike was enough to clinch victory over Rafael Benítez's team after visiting winger Luis García had an effort ruled out for offside.
Rapid counterattack
Liverpool, in eleventh position, enjoyed plenty of possession but were undone by a rapid counterattack seven minutes before the break. Henrik Pedersen crossed low from the left and after the ball eluded both Bolton forward Stylianos Giannakopoulos and Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, Davies applied the right-footed finish. Radhi Jaïdi and Jay-Jay Okocha also drew saves from Dudek as Bolton pressed for a second.
