Cole goal cheers Chelsea

Joe Cole's winner at Birmingham City FC sent Chelsea FC temporarily top of the Premiership.

A deflected shot from substitute Joe Cole earned Chelsea FC three points at Birmingham City FC that took José Mourinho's team top of the Premiership.

Second-half winner
Chelsea, who started the season with a 1-0 victory against Manchester United FC last Sunday, were unable to produce a particularly fluent performance, but collected a second successive victory thanks to Cole's 68th-minute effort.

United win
Manchester United bounced back from last week's defeat at Chelsea with a 2-1 win against promoted Norwich City FC at Old Trafford thanks to goals from David Bellion and Alan Smith. Bellion put United ahead after 33 minutes with a close-range finish and Smith volleyed a second five minutes into the second period, although Paul McVeigh's 75th-minute strike set up an intriguing finale.

Liverpool lift
Liverpool FC came from a goal down at Anfield to defeat Manchester City FC, who took the lead through former Liverpool striker Nicolas Anlkea on the stroke of half-time. Milan Baroš equalised three minutes into the second half and captain Steven Gerrard scored what proved to be the winner 15 minutes from time. City finished with ten men following Richard Dunne's second yellow card with eight minutes left.

Tottenham triumph
Timothée Atouba's 51st-minute goal proved enough to earn Tottenham Hotspur FC three impressive points at Newcastle United FC, while Andy Cole scored twice on his home debut for Fulham FC, finding the net at the start and end of the match to earn victory against Bolton Wanderers FC.

Everton fightback
Everton FC recovered from Mark Hudson's early goal to record a 3-1 victory at Crysal Palace FC, with two strikes from Danish international Thomas Gravesen – the first a penalty – turning the match in the visitors' favour. Despite the 71st-minute dismissal of Gary Naysmith, Marcus Bent added a late third to seal the points.

Own goal
David Unsworth's own goal three minutes from time gave Charlton Athletic FC victory against Postmouth FC, for whom Patrik Berger had cancelled out Jason Euell's first-half effort.

Added-time penalty
In Saturday's early game, an added-timed penalty gave Southampton FC a dramatic victory at home to Blackburn Rovers FC. Kevin Phillips gave Southampton the lead in the 32nd minute, but second-half goals from Barry Ferguson and Paul Dickov turned the match in Blackburn's favour. Anders Svensson equalised with 16 minutes left, and Craig Short's aerial challenge on Beattie gave the striker the chance to settle the match from the penalty spot.

Arsenal opportunity
On Sunday, champions Arsenal FC can equal Nottingham Forest FC’s record of 42 league matches without defeat at home to Middlesbrough FC, while West Bromwich Albion FC meet local rivals Aston Villa FC.
