Cup woe for Mönchengladbach

Christian Ziege was sent off as VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach lost to FC Bayern München Amateurs.

Christian Ziege was sent off as VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach suffered a shock defeat by FC Bayern München Amateurs in the first round of the German Cup on Sunday.

Late leveller
Playing only his third competitive game for the Bundesliga club, Ziege saw red during extra time with the scores level at 1-1. Only an 88th-minute equaliser from Joris Van Houdt had prevented the amateur side winning in normal time and when the match went to penalties, Bayern's amateurs prevailed 7-6 on spot-kicks.

Fach fury
Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Holger Fach said: "We didn't manage to give the Munich amateurs many problems. It's a big disappointment. We performed very, very badly. If you look at how we did today, we've got work to do in all areas."

Bulgarian blunder
VfL Wolfsburg also bowed out. Two Thomas Brdadic goals helped them to a comfortable 3-0 victory against FC Köln Amateurs, only for the result to be reversed as Wolfsburg fielded Bulgarian Marian Hristov, who was still banned from cup matches after a red card in May 2003.

Neuendorf saviour
There were no shocks elsewhere, with all four of the other top-flight clubs safely negotiating their ties away from home against lesser opposition to make the second round. Hannover 96 were 3-0 winners against VfR Neumuenster, while Hertha BSC Berlin needed an 86th-minute goal from Andreas Neuendorf to defeat TSV Aindling.

Klopp delight
Top-flight newcomers 1. FSV Mainz were the day's highest scorers, finding the net five times as they defeated VfR Aalen. Jürgen Klopp's side raced into a three-goal lead with strikes from Conor Casey and the Weiland brothers, Dennis and Niclas, before Aalen scored their first of two goals in reply. Fabian Gerber restored the three-goal margin before Casey added his second 15 minutes from time.

Skela spot-kick
Elsewhere, a goal from Patrick Owomoyela and Ervin Skela's penalty helped DSC Arminia Bielefeld to a 2-1 win against amateur side VFC Plauen.
