Pastoriza passes away

Obituaries

Former AS Monaco FC player and Club Atlético de Madrid coach José Omar Pastoriza has died at the age of 62.

Monaco move
Born in Rosario, Argentina on 23 May 1942, Pastoriza started out as a midfield player with Club Colón before enjoying successful stints at Racing Club and CA Independiente where he picked up three league titles. Monaco brought the Argentinian international to Europe in 1972 but he returned to Independiente four years later as coach and guided the team to the 1984 Copa Libertadores and European/South American Cup, where they beat Liverpool FC.

Brazilian spell
Spells in Brazil with Grêmio FPA and Fluminense FC followed before he was lured back to Europe to take charge of Atlético for two months in 1993. Known as 'El Pato' (the duck), Pastoriza went on to coach the Venezuela and El Salvador national teams, CA Boca Juniors and Bolivia's Club Bolívar. In December 2003 he became Independiente's technical director.
