Article body
FC Spartak Moskva and holders Villarreal CF are set for a fascinating UEFA Intertoto Cup tie after negotiating the second round on a day when two of the three Belgian entrants were eliminated.
Victories confirmed
Spartak already led Croatia's NK Kamen Ingrad 4-1 after last week's first leg in Moscow, and Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the only goal of the return 37 minutes in to seal a tie against 2003 winners Villarreal. The Spanish side beat Danish team Odense BK 2-0 to win 5-0 on aggregate, and will host the first leg against Spartak next weekend. José Mari and Héctor Font scored for Villarreal.
Vardar delight
Another of last season's victors, FC Schalke 04, will face FK Vardar after the side from F.Y.R. Macedonia ousted Belgium's KAA Gent on penalties. Vardar led 1-0 from their home leg, but Nikola Doševski's own goal in the 89th minute of the return kept Gent in the tie. But in the shoot-out, with the score at 3-3 with four penalties taken each, Ivica Jarakovic's spot-kick was saved by Velimir Zdravkovic and Danio Masev converted to take Vardar through.
Genk earn Dortmund tie
Also beating Belgian opposition were Czech team FC Zlín. Having played a goalless first leg at KVC Westero, Václav Cincala, Josef Lukaštik and Vladimir Malar secured a 3-0 aggregate victory and a tie versus Spain's Club Atlético de Madrid. However, KRC Genk kept alive Belgian participation, by defending a 2-1 first-leg lead with a goalless return at Bulgaria's PFC Marek Dupnitza, but only after the home side missed a penalty through Vassil Kirov. Genk now play BV Borussia Dortmund.
Teplice ousted
Joining compatriots Zlín in the third round are FC Slovan Liberec, who sailed past Slovakia's FK ZTS Dubnica with five answered second-leg goals, winning 7-1 on aggregate. They will face Dutch club Roda JC, but another Czech team, FK Teplice, are out, after losing 2-0 at FC Shinnik Yaroslavl, the Russian club through 4-1 overall to play Portugal's UD Leiria.
Šimko winner
Not meeting the same fate as Slovakian rivals Dubnica were FC Spartak Trnava. Leading 2-1 from the home leg of their tie with FK Sloboda Tuzla, the Trnava team scored the only goal of the return in Bosnia-Herzegovina through Roman Šimko. They now meet either NK Slaven Koprivnica or KS Vllaznia, one of five ties to be completed on Sunday.
Vasiliauskas delights Vetra
The winners of another of those fixtures, Esbjerg fB or OGC Nice, will meet Lithuania's FK Vetra after they edged past Scottish side Hibernian FC. The two teams had drawn 1-1 in Edinburgh, and Vetra took full advantage of home soil as Nerijus Vasiliauskas forced the ball over the line just after the hour mark to score the only goal.
Mammadov goal not enough
Tampere United and OFK Beograd complete the last third round tie to be known after both made the most of first-leg leads. Tampere won 3-0 last week against Azerbaijan's FK Khazar Universiteti, and although Elshan Mammadov's goal ensured a 1-0 home win in the Baku return, the Finnish side progressed 3-1 overall.
OFK through
OFK, meanwhile, held a 3-1 lead going into the away leg of their tie with Latvia's FC Dinaberg, and the Belgrade team picked up second-half goals from Rade Vukotic and Miljan Mrdakovic to win 5-1 on aggregate.
