Versatile Dutch international defender Mario Melchiot has switched to Birmingham City FC from Chelsea FC on a free transfer.
Three-year contract
The 27-year-old right-back, who can also play elsewhere in defence or midfield, has found his Chelsea position taken by Paulo Ferreira, who followed new manager José Mourinho from FC Porto. Melchiot, who joined Chelsea in 1999 from AFC Ajax , has agreed a three-year contract at Birmingham.
'International pedigree'
"He is a player that I have admired for a long time. He is a quality player with international pedigree," said Birmingham manager Steve Bruce, who has also signed Emile Heskey, Muzzy Izzet and Julian Gray this summer.
