Miti makes sure for Odense

Mwape Miti helped Odense BK reach the second round in style along with fellow Danish side Esbjerg fB.

Miti hat-trick
The Irish League part-timers Ballymena produced a heroic performance in Denmark last week to hold OB to a goalless draw and they returned to Northern Ireland with a real hope of Intertoto Cup success. But a couple of defensive errors saw Kenny Shiels' men 2-0 down at the break before five second-half goals, including a hat-trick from Zambian international Mwape Miti, dashed their hopes. OB will now meet one of last year's winners - and eventual UEFA Cup semi-finalists - Villarreal CF in the second round.

Musheds double
Aberystwyth Town FC were similarly placed after a 0-0 draw at home against Latvian club FC Dinaburg gave them hopes of becoming the first Welsh Premiership club to reach the second round. But they too suffered a heavy defeat, this time 4-0, as Dinaburg's class eventually told at the Celtnieks stadium, thanks in part to two goals by Alexanders Musheds.

Overturned deficit
Just one side managed to overturn a first-leg deficit, with a 15th-minute strike from Bojan Vrucina restoring parity for NK Slaven Koprivnica against Maltese side Hibernians FC. A late penalty from Dalibor Viskovic and a Mario Mijatovic strike in the final minute gave the Croatian team a flattering 4-2 aggregate victory. Despite a 1-0 loss to KS Vilaznia in Israel, Hapoel Beer-Sheva FC progressed on the away goals rule courtesy of a 2-1 win in Albania last weekend.

Scholarly excellence
After their 4-0 home win became a 3-0 loss after UEFA discovered they had fielded an ineligible player, SW Bregenz, were hoping that a similar performance could see them scrape through to the second round. But the Azerbaijan club never looked like losing and were 2-1 winners, for a 5-1 aggregate success.

Brazilian brilliance
The biggest aggregate wins came at Sartid and Vardar. The Serbo-Montenegrin outfit Sartid beat Andorran minnows UE Sant Julià 3-0 at home to seal an 11-0 triumph, while the F.Y.R. Macedonia team Vardar matched the 5-1 away result last weekend to secured a 10-2 aggregate margin. Brazilian striker Oliveira Wandeir Dos Santos scored four times for the hosts to take his Intertoto Cup tally to six.

Comfortable wins
Elsewhere, Jan Kristiansen scored twice as Danish challengers EfB won 4-0 at NSÍ Runavik to round off a 7-1 aggregate victory while KAA Gent are also through after a single Sandy Martens goal gave the Belgian team a 1-0 second-leg win against Fylkir to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory. Finally, Lithuanian outfit FK Vetra beat JK Trans Narva 1-0 in Estonia, to complete a comfortable 4-0 aggregate triumph. A late Šarunas Litvinas goal secured Vetra's place in the second round and a tie with Scottish side Hibernian FC.
