Captain's corker
Captain marvel Danny Murray scored twice as Cork produced their best-ever European performance at home to Swedish side Malmö FF. The Irish Premier Division side, who have now gone eleven games unbeaten, got off to a great start and took a tenth-minute lead through John O'Flynn.
Late consolation
Murray doubled the advantage ten minutes before the break and then grabbed a second just after the hour as Cork threatened to seal the tie in Ireland. But Malmö came back and a goal from substitute Darko Lukanovic five minutes from time gave his side a glimmer of hope going into next Sunday's return.
Seasiders held
Aberystwyth Town FC's hopes of becoming the first Welsh Premiership club to reach the second round are in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Latvian side FC Dinaburg at Newtown. John Lawless hit the post just before half-time as the Welsh side failed to take advantage of their first-half dominance. Tomaz Pertia led a Dinaburg fightback in the second period, but they rarely troubled the home team's goal.
Dos Santos double
The most comprehensive success in Saturday's matches came at Ethnikos Achnas FC where five second-half goals helped Macedonian visitors Vardar to a 5-1 win. Two goals by Oliveira Wandeir Dos Santos, either side of an Andreas Katzis own goal, gave Vardar a good lead and two further strikes in the last two minutes by Dragan Nacevski and Zarko Serafimovski sealed victory. The Cypriot club had to settle for a consolation from Kiriakos Apostolou.
Mighty minnows
Hibernians FC achieved an excellent 2-1 victory against NK Slaven Koprivnica to take a one-goal lead to Croatia next Saturday. The Maltese outfit went ahead after 13 minutes through Terence Scerri but Srebrenko Posavec levelled from the penalty spot just before the break when Roderick Baldacchino felled Pero Pejic. But Hibernians refused to lie back and Andre Schembri nodded in what proved to be the winner shortly after the hour.
Late goal
A goal by Pavol Masaryk four minutes into added time capped a commanding 3-0 victory for Slovakia's FC Spartak Trnava against Hungary's Debrecen VSC. Marian Molnar opened the scoring after ten minutes before Miroslav Kriss doubled the advantage shortly after the break as the hosts cruised to victory. The other Hungarian side in action had more luck though, with Ivan Balasko's second-half penalty giving MFC Sopron a one-goal cushion to take to the Czech Republic next week against FK Teplice.
Narrow leads
Slovenian outfit CMC Publikum also won by the odd goal as Zora Baldovaliev and Dare Vrsic found the target in a 2-1 home triumph against FK Sloboda Tuzla. Darko Vojvodic replied for the visitors from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Finally, three first-half goals by Jess Thorup, Soren Barslund and Jerry Lucena gave Danish club EfB a 3-1 win against NSÍ Runavik of the Faroe Islands.
