Former Club Atlético de Madrid president Jesús Gil, 71, has suffered a stroke.

Major shareholder and former Club Atlético de Madrid president Jesús Gil was taken into intensive care today after suffering a cerebral thrombosis.

Observation required
The 71-year-old capital club icon, who became Atlético president in 1987 but stepped down last year, was rushed to Nuestra Señora del Prado hospital on Sunday afternoon after collapsing at his country retreat in Valdolivas. Doctors have warned that Gil, who is believed to be paralysed down the right-hand side of his body, will be kept in observation for the next few days. A hospital spokesperson said: "We will have to wait to see how he reacts over the next 24 hours."
