Bayern stand by Zickler

Injured striker Alexander Zickler will remain at FC Bayern München for a 12th season after signing a new deal.

Broken legs
Bayern's second longest-serving player after Mehmet Scholl, Zickler joined Bayern in 1993 from 1. FC Dynamo Dresden and scored a penalty in the UEFA Champions League final shoot-out victory against Valencia CF in 2001. However, a series of injuries, including three broken legs, have limited the 31-year-old to just 25 Bundesliga matches in three seasons.

Expected to leave
Zickler was expected to leave the Olympiastadion this summer but his lack of fitness means no offers have come in. Bayern had always said they would renew his contract in reward for his services to the club and Zickler will no doubt be keen to reward their faith in 2004/05.
