Combined role
The 35-year-old former midfield player - also a member of the Belgian parliament - will combine the roles of coach and technical chief, a position similar to that of a British club manager. "I will put together the technical staff and decide about the transfers and the playing system," Wilmots said. "I am glad to be back at the club where it all started for me, and now a new step in my career will also start here."
Schalke links
Wilmots, who also played for KV Mechelen, R. Standard de Liege, FC Schalke 04 and FC Girondins de Bordeaux. He ended his playing career back at the Bundesliga club, where he retains strong links. "If I need a player, I can call [Schalke] manager Rudi Assauer and within ten seconds I will know if he has a player for us or can help us further," Wilmots said.
