Brugge battle for contention

Members

Club Brugge KV made leaders RSC Anderlecht pay for a rare defeat in the Belgian First Division.

Further pressure
Having defeated Anderlecht 1-0 two weeks ago, Brugge applied further pressure on the division's runaway leaders with an impressive display of attacking football. Gert Verheyen and Bengt Sæternes both scored in the first half and Brazilian striker Victor popped up to seal the comfortable victory late on.

Solitary goal
Anderlecht went down to a solitary 57th-minute goal from midfield player Kristof Snelders following a mistake by young defender Vincent Kompany. It was not the way coach Hugo Broos would have chosen to mark his 500th game as a coach in the Belgian first division.

Charleroi charge
Elsewhere, fourth-placed R. Excelsior Mouscron and KSK Beveren drew 2-2 while third-placed R. Standard de Liège were held to a 1-1 draw by Sint-Truidense VV. At the other end of the table, R. Charleroi SC managed to brush off KVC Westerlo, a team ten places above them in the standings, 3-1 thanks to goals from Adekamni Olufade, Gregory Dufer and Sébastien Chabaud.

Schaessen strike
David Van Hoyweghen's effort was enough for KAA Gent to edge out RAEC Mons 1-0 while Marc Schaessens' second-half strike allowed K. Lierse SK to see off bottom side R. Antwerp 1-0. In the weekend's other game, Cercle Brugge KSV overcame KSC Lokeren OV 2-0 away from home.
