Injury problems
The Finnish playmaker, who is in his second spell with the Dutch league leaders, has been limited to six league appearances this term because of injury and managing director Arie van Eijden admitted that "the fact that he was available so little was part of the reason not to extend his contract".
Record scorer
Now 33, Litmanen is Ajax's record scorer in Europe with 24 goals and was part of their European Champion Clubs' Cup-winning team of 1995 during his first period with the club, which ran from 1992-99. He left to join FC Barcelona but returned in 2002, following a short spell with Liverpool FC.
