Dobrev announces departure

Members

Guentcho Dobrev has decided to step down as coach of Hamrun Spartans FC with immediate effect.

Mutual agreement
Dobrev reached a mutual agreement with the Hamrun club after the 3-1 defeat last Sunday by fellow relegation candidates Msida St. Joseph FC. The loss leaves the seven-times Maltese champions with little hope of surviving in the top flight - they are stranded at the bottom of the 'relegation pool' with just two points and are still searching for their first win of the season.

President's criticism
Dobrev had been at the club for just five months, during which time president Antoine Attard, who has also announced he will be quitting his post at the end of the season, openly criticised the Bulgarian's tactics. The once mighty Spartans are also suffering financial difficulties.

Sultana possibility
The leading contender to replace Dobrev is understood to be Malta's all-time record goalscorer Stefan Sultana, who notched up his 181st Premier League goal on Sunday. The Hamrun loyalist and club captain will be 36 next July, and is a qualified coach.
