Contract delight for Neururer

German Bundesliga high-fliers VfL Bochum 1848 have extended coach Peter Neururer's contract until 2007.

Europe beckoning
Neururer took charge of Bochum in December 2001 when they were in the 2. Bundesliga. Since then he has led them back into the top flight and this season they are well placed to qualify for European competition. Currently in fourth position, they are just three points behind VfB Stuttgart, who occupy the third and final UEFA Champions League qualification berth.

'Time was right'
"I have been thinking about offering him a new contract for two months now," said Bochum chairman Werner Altegoer. "I know that we weren't in a hurry, but I felt that the time was right."

Pleased with recognition
The 49-year-old Neururer's previous agreement was due to run until June 2005, and he was happy with the board's show of faith in his abilities. "It shows that the club recognise what I am doing," he said. "In times like these it is not normal for a coach to have a long-term deal."
