On-loan striker Lomana LuaLua struck an 89th-minute leveller for Portsmouth FC to deny his employers Newcastle United FC all three Premiership points at Fratton Park on Sunday. The visitors had looked likely to move clear of Liverpool FC, who drew 2-2 with Leeds United AFC, in the race for the Premiership's fourth UEFA Champions League spot until LuaLua's late volley.
Recent acquisition
The striker, who only moved to the south-coast club during the January transfer window, ensured Portsmouth climbed out of the relegation zone. Until that point the home side had looked on course for their fourth defeat in five Premiership games with only Craig Bellamy's 34th-minute goal separating the sides.
Kewell returns
The result at Elland Road left Leeds, fighting for survival both on and off the pitch, bottom of the table but it could have been worse after Liverpool's Harry Kewell opened the scoring against his former club in the 21st minute. Thankfully for the beleaguered home fans, Eirik Bakke levelled the scores eight minutes later, tapping in after Jermaine Pennant's flick-on.
Frantic action
Mark Viduka then put Leeds ahead with a right-footed lob in the 34th minute but Milan Baroš ensured the sides went in all square at the break with a powerful 42nd-minute strike. Baroš and Alan Smith both hit the crossbar in the second half but neither side could find a winner. Newcastle stay in fourth place on 42 points, 16 behind third-placed Manchester United FC and three clear of sixth-placed Liverpool. Leeds are still bottom, two points behind 17th-placed Portsmouth.
