Athletic ahead
Athletic made the early running and took the lead on 12 minutes when Francisco Yeste struck a 25-metre free-kick over the defensive wall and into the top corner. Ten minutes later the Basque side extended their advantage as Tiko collected the ball outside the area, swerved to the right and fired a shot inside the left-hand post.
Zaragoza recover
But Zaragoza fought back and, two minutes later, a defensive mix-up on the edge of the Athletic box allowed David Villa to pounce on a loose ball. He turned sharply and drilled a shot into the net with his right foot. The home side then drew level two minutes into the second half when Villa headed in a cross from Luciano Galletti.
Joy for Sevilla
In the day's other game, Sevilla FC claimed their first away win of the season as two goals from Julio Baptista helped secure a 4-0 victory at Real Racing Club Santander.
