Nasty challenge
The fracture to Assunção's left ankle was the result of a challenge from team-mate Antonio 'Ito' Álvarez. The 27-year-old Brazilian was rushed to a nearby clinic in Seville where he was due to be operated on on Thursday afternoon.
Three months out
Betis medical officer Santiago Pérez estimated that Assunção would be sidelined for three months - a major setback for coach Víctor Fernández. Assunção has been a key player for the Spanish team since his 2002 signing from AS Roma.
