Reyes runs Madrid ragged

Spanish international José Reyes produced a playmaking masterclass for Sevilla FC as they stormed to a surprise 4-1 win against Real Madrid CF in the Primera División on Sunday.

International hopes
The 20-year-old Reyes did not get on the scoresheet but his inspired performance will have boosted his chances of winning his second cap for his country on Saturday in the first leg of the crucial UEFA EURO 2004™ play-off against Norway. Reyes scored twice on his debut against Armenia in October. Five of Madrid's side last night and six of their players in all are also in the Spain squad for the first leg in Valencia. One of them, Guti, was red-carded for retaliation.

Bad start
An own goal from Iván Helguera ensured Madrid made a bad start and further first-half strikes from Dario Silva, Daniel Alves and Francisco Casquero compounded their misery. Ronaldo pulled one back at the start of the second half but Sevilla's defence held firm to the last.

Deportivo back on top
Madrid's humbling, and Valencia's 2-1 home defeat against Real Racing Club Santander, enabled RC Deportivo de La Coruña to put their midweek embarrassment behind them and climb back top. Deportivo were humbled 8-3 by AS Monaco FC in the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday but recovered with a 2-1 victory against Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Saturday.

Jauregi double
Depor fell behind to Nihat Kahveci's long-range effort but two own goals from Igor Jauregi handed Deportivo victory and capped a strange week for the Galician side.

Milan held
In Italy, AC Milan were held to a goalless draw by Parma AC on Sunday - allowing Juventus FC to move clear at the top with their 4-1 win against Udinese Calcio. Alessandro Del Piero hit the crossbar with a 55th-minute penalty before Udinese went ahead through a spot-kick of their own, Marek Jankulovksi scoring after Gianluigi Buffon had felled Dino Fava.

Di Vaio eases fears
The visitors led until the 79th minute when substitute Marco Di Vaio eased fears of a first home defeat in more than ten months by turning David Trezeguet's cross into the Udinese net. Fellow substitute Fabrizio Miccoli put Juve ahead six minutes later and there was still time for further goals for Di Vaio and Trezeguet.

Roma joy
After a goalless first 80 minutes, goals from Brazilians Mancini and Emerson secured AS Roma a 2-0 victory in the Rome derby against S.S. Lazio. The win ensured Fabio Capello's side retained their undefeated record in the league this season and moved into second place, ahead of Milan on goal difference.

Giggs at the double
Ryan Giggs scored both of Manchester United FC's goals as the Premiership champions recorded a 2-1 victory against Liverpool FC at Anfield on Sunday. The win kept Sir Alex Ferguson's side a point behind Chelsea FC, who dispatched visiting Newcastle United FC 5-0 at Stamford Bridge - and two behind leaders Arsenal FC, who beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC 2-1 on Saturday.

Pršo phenomenon
Dado Pršo's birthday celebrations continued long into the weekend as he followed up his four-goal haul against Deportivo with the winning strike against AC Ajaccio to keep Monaco top of France's Ligue 1. Olympique Lyonnais are three points behind in second after winning their Sunday evening encounter against third-placed Olympique de Marseille 4-1.

Leverkusen rise
Bayer 04 Leverkusen returned to second place in the German Bundesliga on Sunday with a 3-1 win at home against FC Schalke 04. Marko Babic and Daniel Bierofka were on target for Klaus Augenthaler's side, who are a point behind undefeated VfB Stuttgart. The leaders have conceded just two goals in 12 league games this season following their 2-0 victory against struggling Eintracht Frankfurt.
