Fernandez the man for Espanyol

RCD Espanyol have ended coach Javier Clemente's third spell at the club, replacing him with Luis Fernandez.

RCD Espanyol have parted company with coach Javier Clemente and appointed Luis Fernandez in his place.

Bottom of the table
The Barcelona side are bottom of the Primera División with five points from ten games following their 2-0 defeat at home to Real Zaragoza at the weekend. The club felt that they had no option but to relieve the 53-year-old Basque of his duties.

Three stints
Clemente, the former Spanish national team coach, was in his third stint at Espanyol. He coached the side before from 1986 until 1989 - when he took them to the 1988 UEFA Cup final - and then again during the 1991/92 season when he saved them from relegation. His most recent tenure began midway through last season, when he once again saved them from the drop.

Recent tenure
For Fernandez, the appointment marks a return to coaching following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain FC in the summer. The former French international previously coached Athletic Club Bilbao in the Primera División The club also announced that Miquel Corominas will be replacing Sergio Morgado as technical director.
