Club Atlético de Madrid captain Carlos Aguilera has undergone knee surgery that will keep him out of action for the next six weeks.
'Long-term injury'
Aguilera has a long-standing cartilage problem that was aggravated at the weekend in Atlético's Primera División victory over RCD Mallorca. "It was a long-term injury that became unbearable for the player," said the surgeon who performed the operation, Dr Carlos Abad.
Lack of cover
The absence of the right-back is a blow for Atlético, who are struggling in 15th place in the league, as the only cover they have for that position, Cosmin Contra, is also injured. Contra underwent ankle surgery after picking up an injury in pre-season and will not be fit until December.
