Hartson wins Welsh honour

Members

Celtic FC striker John Hartson has been named Welsh Player of the Year for a joint-record third time.

Record mark
Hartson was presented with the Football Association of Wales award on Monday night in a ceremony at the national team's Cardiff hotel, where they are staying ahead of Saturday's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Serbia and Montenegro.

Hat-trick of awards
Hartson pipped Birmingham City FC's Robbie Savage and 2002 winner Simon Davies of Tottenham Hotspur FC to the award. He had previously claimed the prize in 1998 and 2001.

Others honoured
Cardiff City FC striker Robert Earnshaw was named Welsh Club Player of the Year for scoring 35 goals as his team won promotion to the English first division last season. Another English-based player, Gillingham FC goalkeeper Jason Brown, was the Welsh Young Player of the Year.
