Deflected winner
Rangers had won their first seven league games of the campaign, but Celtic's success at Ibrox – secured 20 seconds into the second half when John Hartson's attempted cross was deflected into the net by Rangers defender Zurab Khizanishvili – lifted Martin O'Neill's men a point above the old enemy in the standings.
Celtic chances
The visitors had the best of a scrappy affair, with Alan Thompson, Henrik Larsson and Hartson all going close to adding further goals, while Rangers struggled to break down a depleted Celtic defence, with striker Chris Sutton pressed into duty as an emergency centre-back.
Kahlenberg celebrations
In Denmark, Thomas Kahlenberg celebrated his contract extension with Brøndby IF by scoring twice in a 3-0 win against Esbjerg fB. Kahlenberg, who agreed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2008, scored the first two goals before Jonas Kamper added a third. The result took the home side above EfB at the Superliga summit, while FC København went second with a 1-0 victory at Akademisk Boldklub.
Górnik gain
GKS Górnik Leczna also claimed the lead in Poland, taking full advantage of KS Amica Wronki's 3-1 defeat at Legia Warszawa by recording a 2-1 home victory against KP Polonia Warszawa and going a point clear at the top of the Ekstraklasa.
Basel march on
Swiss pacesetters FC Basel extended their record-breaking start to the season with a 13th successive league win against FC Wil 1900 on Sunday. Two goals from Marco Streller and one apiece from Benjamin Huggel and Philippe Degen gave Christian Gross's side a 4-0 victory.
Top two draw
Ukrainian Premier League leaders FC Shakhtar Donetsk, however, lost their 100 per cent record as they drew 1-1 at arch-rivals FC Dynamo Kyiv. Anatoly Tymoshchyuk put the visitors in front with a deflected free-kick, but Diogo Rincón's close-range finish earned Dynamo a draw, although Shakhtar maintained a five-point lead in the standings.
Steaua subdued
Romanian First Division leaders FC Steaua Bucuresti also preserved their unbeaten record, although they were held to a goalless draw by ten-man FC Arges-Dacia Pitesti on Sunday. The point was enough to keep Steaua above neighbours FC Dinamo Bucuresti – who defeated FC Farul Constanta 3-2 – on goal difference.
Down to the wire
HJK Helsinki went a point clear at the top of the Finnish Veikkausliiga with a 3-0 triumph against FC Jazz, although previous leaders FC Haka – who drew 2-2 at FC Hämeenlinna – have three games left to HJK's two.
Flora in bloom
The championship race is more clear-cut in Estonia, with FC Flora seven points clear with four matches to play after a 3-1 victory at FC Levadia Maardu. Second-placed FC TVMK Tallinn lost 2-0 at JK Trans Narva and must win their three remaining games to have any chance of taking the title.
Hakobyan cannot stop scoring
Finally in Armenia, FC Banants striker Ara Hakobyan maintained his astonishing run of form with his fifth hat-trick of the season as his side beat FC Kotayk 6-0. Hakobyan has now scored an amazing 34 goals in 16 league games this season.
