England round-up: Portsmouth reach top

Portsmouth FC lead the way after Teddy Sheringham inspired a 4-0 win against Bolton Wanderers FC.

Portsmouth FC are the new leaders of the Premiership after an emphatic 4-0 victory against Bolton Wanderers FC.

Sheringham hat-trick
The newly promoted side had veteran striker Teddy Sheringham to thank as he struck a hat-trick in a game which was scoreless at half-time. Having dominated the first half, Portsmouth finally broke through on 47 minutes when Steve Stone converted after Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jääskeläinen could only parry a Patrick Berger shot.

Late goals
Ten minutes later, the 37-year-old Sheringham headed in his second goal for the club since his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur FC from a Boris Zivkovic cross. Portsmouth needed to win by four clear goals to overhaul Manchester City FC - who only took over at the top of the table 24 hours ago - and they had to wait until the final two minutes for Sheringham to first turn in after good work from Stone and then complete his haul with a penalty.

Rooney makes point
It was a tale of three draws in the remaining matches. Charlton Atheltic FC led twice against Everton FC through a pair of Jason Euell penalties, but first Steve Watson and then Wayne Rooney, with a powerful 72nd-minute goal, ensured the visitors pegged their London hosts back for a point.

Goalless at Leeds
UEFA Cup contenders Southampton FC drew for the third time in their three opening matches as they were held 0-0 at Leeds United AFC, another side yet to win this season. Lamine Sakho had a goal disallowed on three minutes for the home team when his header from Gary Kelly's free-kick was ruled offside.

Mendieta bow
It was a similar story at promoted Leicester City FC, who played out a goalless game against a Middlesbrough FC side which moved off the bottom of the table and secured their first point this season. Gaizka Mendieta made his debut for the visitors.
