FK Austria Wien secured the Austrian Super Cup with a 2-1 win against FC Kärnten.
Winning start
The victory marked a winning start for new Austria coach Joachim Löw in his first match in charge. Löw took over from Christoph Daum, who left for Turkish Super League side Fenerbahçe SK having guided the Vienna side to the league and cup double last season.
Early lead
New signing Richard Kitzbichler opened the scoring after only six minutes with a deflected shot and, although Marijo Maric equalised after 19 minutes, Austria remained largely in control of the match, and sealed victory 14 minutes from time thanks to Michael Wagner's spectacular 25-metre strike.
'Deserved win'
"Austria deserved to win, because they had the better chances and showed some fine teamwork, especially in the first half," said Kärnten coach Hannes Haubitz.
'First competitive match'
Meanwhile, Löw was not fully satisfied by the performance of his own team. "In parts it became obvious that it was our first competitive match after a short pre-season," he said "Sometimes we failed to mark tightly and lacked concentration, but we also showed some good attacks." The new Austrian Bundesliga season kicks off on Wednesday.
