Republic of Ireland round-up: Rovers narrow gap

Members

A late goal from Tony Grant allowed Shamrock Rovers FC to close in on leaders Shelbourne FC.

Ten unbeaten
Shelbourne had gone into the weekend four points clear after five wins and five draws from their first ten matches of the season. However, second-half goals from Derry City FC's Gareth McGlynn and Ciaran Martyn ensured Shels were beaten 2-0 at the Brandywell.

Dublin derby
That defeat allowed Rovers to capitalise with a 1-0 win against Dublin rivals St Patrick's Athletic FC at Richmond Park. The game looked to be heading for a stalemate until Rovers striker Grant poked the ball into the net from six metres with just five minutes remaining.

O'Brien winner
Waterford United FC moved into third position after a fine 2-1 victory over Drogheda United FC. Daryl Murphy put Waterford in front after 35 minutes, reacting quickest when a 30-metre Gary O'Neill effort rebounded back off the upright. Defender Willie Byrne converted a cross from Kevin O'Brien after 67 minutes to secure the victory for Waterford, with Darren Beesley's strike for Drogheda proving a mere consolation.

Back with a goal
Cork City FC striker John O'Flynn returned from a successful spell with the Irish Under-21 side, where he scored twice in three games, to get the crucial goal as his side defeated basement club University College Dublin FC 1-0 at Turners Cross. O'Flynn scored from close range after Kevin Doyle's initial effort was blocked into his path.

Disappointing draw
Defending champions Bohemian FC remain rooted in mid-table after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Longford Town FC at Dalymount Park. Eric Lavine put Longford in front after three minutes to pile on the misery for Bohemians manager Stephen Kenny, who was taking on his former club.

Crowe return
However, the hosts were on level terms 20 minutes later when Robbie Doyle volleyed in his second goal of the season. Despite the return from injury of Republic Of Ireland international Glen Crowe, who came on as a substitute in the second half, Bohs failed to score the decisive second goal and remain six points off the leaders.
