MTK Hungária FC overcame Újpesti TE 1-0 to claim the 1. Liga title in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

Ferencváros held
Level on points with leaders Ferencvárosi TC before the match, but trailing them on head-to-head results this season, MTK's victory proved decisive as Ferencváros were held to a goalless draw by Debreceni VSC. Some 16,000 spectators were set to celebrate a Ferencváros victory at the Ülloi úti stadium but they had not taken a resilient Debrecen into account.

Roland winner
MTK made the most of the leaders' slip to take the title thanks to Juhász Roland's 35th-minute goal. The rangy Under-21 international made himself the hero, heading in Csaba Madar's pinpoint to seal a famous victory. The win meant that Sándor Egervári has now won his third Hungarian title, after guiding MTK (1999/2000) and Dunaferr SE (2001/01) to glory.

Usvat on target
Elsewhere in the 1. Liga championship pool, Siófok FC beat Györi ETO FC 2-1 to finish fifth in the standings as goals from Ákos Koller and Daniel Usvat wiped out Herczeg's 55th-minute opener for Gyor.

Heroic Horváth
In the relegation group, Dunaferr SE, already condemned to relegation, lost 4-1 at Kispest Honvéd FC, while András Horváth's late winner for MFC Sopron gave his side the three points following a 2-1 victory against Videoton FC Fehérvár. Békéscsabai EFC and Zalaegerszegi TE played out a 1-1 draw in the weekend's remaining fixture.
