Chairman comes to Alkmaar's aid

AZ Alkmaar have secured a €4m rescue package, allowing the club to claim a professional licence.

Budget deficit
Alkmaar chairman Dirk Scheringa is to loan the money to the cash-strapped club through his finance company, Frisia Financieringen. This will cover the bulk of the gap in Alkmaar's budget for the 2003/04 campaign, and is likely to convince the Royal Netherlands Football Association to grant the club a licence.

'Some extra income'
Alkmaar hope sponsors will now provide the remaining €800,000 they need to be financially solvent. The Frisia company will also pay for the name of Alkmaar's new stadium. "By naming our new stadium after them, we will get some extra income," AZ's head of communications, Willem Zeijlmans, said.

'Healthy future'
The stadium is due for completion in the summer of 2005. Meanwhile, Alkmaar coach Co Adriaanse has told the club he will stay on provided they get their licence. Adriaanse is contracted until 2005. "The club looks to have a healthy future again," he said, after talks with Scheringa.
